What Size Fox ESS Battery Do You Need? (2026 Guide)

The most expensive battery mistake we see isn’t buying the wrong brand. It’s buying the wrong size. Too small and you’re still pulling from the grid at 9pm; too big and you’ve spent money on kWh that never get used. So how big should your Fox ESS battery be? For most Adelaide homes the sweet spot is 15-25 kWh of usable storage — enough to carry the evening peak without overpaying for capacity you’ll never cycle.

The honest way to size a battery isn’t a formula off the internet. It’s your real evening usage. The number that matters is how much power you burn from sunset to bedtime, because that’s the slice a battery is buying back for you instead of the grid. Get that right and the rest follows.

What size Fox ESS battery do I need?

Start with your daily usage off a recent bill — the kWh per day figure. Then look at how much of that lands in the evening, because a battery’s job is to cover the hours your solar isn’t producing. If you sit on the line between two bands, size up rather than down. An extra module is cheaper than discovering a year in that you’re buying grid power every night at 30-50c a kWh because the battery runs flat by 8pm. We confirm the exact size against your bill at the quote.

Size to your evening peak, not your whole day

This is where the supermarket-shelf approach gets people. Your solar already covers the day — panels are producing while the sun’s up, so daytime load mostly comes straight off the roof for free. The battery exists for the other window: roughly 4pm to 9am, when the array is asleep and the grid is most expensive. (SA Power Networks sets the export and connection rules your system has to work within.)

So the question isn’t “how much do I use,” it’s “how much do I use after the sun goes down.” On most family homes that evening-and-overnight slice is 12-20 kWh — dinner, dishwasher, a couple of hours of aircon, lights, the morning kettle and showers. Size the battery to swallow that and you wake up having bought almost nothing from the grid. We saw this on a Hackham job last summer: the owners thought they needed 30 kWh off their daily total, but their evening load was 16, so a 21 kWh Fox ESS covered the peak with headroom and saved them a few thousand on capacity they’d never have cycled.

How modular stacking works on Fox ESS

This is the part that makes sizing forgiving. A Fox ESS system isn’t one sealed box — it’s a stack of modules on a single hybrid inverter. You start around 10 kWh and add modules up the range to 40 kWh-plus, all talking to the same inverter and the same app.

Two things follow from that. First, you can size sensibly today and add capacity later when life changes — an EV lands in the driveway, the kids stop moving out and start moving back, you put in a pool. Adding a module beats ripping out a whole battery and starting again. Second, you’re not forced into clumsy jumps; you can land close to the capacity you actually need instead of overshooting to the next fixed unit. Don’t forget to size the solar to fill it

A battery is only as good as what charges it. There’s no point fitting 21 kWh of storage behind a tired 3 kW array that can’t fill it on a short winter day. As a rough rule we like to see enough solar to charge the battery and still run the daytime house — for most homes that’s 6.6 kW and up, more if you’re going past 21 kWh of storage or adding an EV.

For a smaller home, a couple, or a modest evening load under about 15 kWh a day, 10 kWh is often enough to carry the peak. Larger homes with aircon, a pool or an EV usually need 21 kWh or more. Because Fox ESS is modular, you can start at 10 kWh and add capacity later.


How much battery do I need for an EV?

EV households generally want 28-40 kWh or more, because charging a car overnight is a large extra load on top of normal evening use. Charging the EV from the battery instead of the grid is where the savings are, so size up — and Fox ESS lets you stack modules to get there.


Can I add more capacity to a Fox ESS battery later?
