Will Solar Keep My Power On in a Blackout?
It catches people out every storm season. The power goes off across the street, you glance at your full solar array on the roof, and nothing works. Here’s why. A standard grid-tied solar system is built to shut down the instant the grid drops — it’s a safety rule, not a fault. Solar alone can’t keep your lights on in a blackout. A battery with backup capability can, by running nominated essential circuits while the grid is down.
So the short answer to “will my solar keep the power on?” is no, not on its own. The longer answer is that the right battery setup absolutely can keep the important things running.
Why does grid-tied solar switch off in a blackout?
It comes down to a feature called anti-islanding. When the grid fails, line workers may be out repairing it, and a rooftop system still pushing power into the network could energise lines they’re working on. To prevent that, every grid-connected inverter is required to detect the outage and disconnect within moments — a network safety rule your distributor, SA Power Networks in our area, enforces. That protection is doing exactly what it should.
The catch is that a basic solar inverter can’t tell the difference between “the grid is down so stop exporting” and “the grid is down but keep powering this house.” It just stops. Your panels could be in full sun and the system stays dark until the grid returns. To keep running safely during an outage, you need hardware that can disconnect from the grid and form its own little island around your home. That’s what a backup-capable battery does.
How does a Fox ESS battery keep the power on?
With blackout protection configured at install, a Fox ESS battery detects the outage, safely isolates your home from the grid, and keeps your nominated essential circuits running off stored energy. During daylight, your solar can even top the battery back up while you’re islanded, so a daytime outage can stretch a long way. The changeover happens automatically. You don’t go flipping anything in the dark.
- Automatic detection. The system senses the grid drop and switches your essentials to battery power without you doing a thing.
- Solar recharge while off-grid. In daylight, the panels keep feeding the battery, extending how long you can ride out an outage.
- LFP chemistry that handles Australian heat and holds charge reliably for when you actually need it.
- The Fox ESS app shows you battery state of charge, so you know exactly how much runtime you’ve got left.

What does battery backup actually power — and what doesn’t it?
This is where we have a straight conversation at the quote, because it’s the bit that gets oversold elsewhere. Backup runs your nominated essential circuits, not necessarily the whole house at once. The big power-hungry loads — ducted air conditioning, an electric oven, an instant hot water unit — can flatten a battery fast or exceed what the backup supply can deliver in one hit. So we plan the essentials with you.
| Typically kept on backup | Usually left off backup |
|---|---|
| Lights and power points | Ducted air conditioning |
| Fridge and freezer | Electric oven and cooktop |
| Wi-Fi and modem | Instant electric hot water |
| Phone and laptop charging | Pool pump |
| Medical or CPAP equipment | EV charging |
On a Hackham job last summer the owner mainly wanted the fridge, the Wi-Fi for working from home, and a couple of lights to survive the afternoon outages they’d been getting. We wired those onto the backup circuit and left the ducted system off it. Through the next storm they didn’t notice the grid had gone until a neighbour mentioned it. How long a battery lasts in backup depends on how much you put on those circuits and your battery size — sizing for it properly is covered in our Fox ESS battery sizing guide.
What’s the switchboard requirement?
Backup isn’t only about the battery — it needs the right switching at your meter board so the system can cleanly isolate your home from the grid and feed only the essential circuits. That usually means a compatible switchboard and a backup gateway or changeover device installed alongside the battery. Older boards sometimes need an upgrade to support it, which is exactly the kind of thing we check when we scope your system before quoting, so the price you sign for is the price for a backup that actually works. The product detail lives on our solar battery page.
Does solar work during a power outage?
Not on its own. A standard grid-tied solar system is required to shut down the moment the grid fails, for the safety of line workers. To keep power on during a blackout you need a battery with backup capability, which isolates your home and runs your essential circuits from stored energy.
Will a Fox ESS battery keep my house running in a blackout?
With blackout protection set up at install, yes — it automatically detects the outage and keeps nominated essential circuits like lights, the fridge and Wi-Fi running. In daylight your solar can recharge the battery while off-grid, extending the runtime. It needs a compatible switchboard, which we confirm on site.
What can a battery power during a blackout?
Your nominated essential circuits — typically lights, power points, the fridge and freezer, Wi-Fi, and device or medical equipment charging. Big loads like ducted aircon, an electric oven, instant hot water and pool pumps are usually left off the backup circuit so they don’t drain the battery quickly.
Why does my solar shut off when the power goes out?
It’s a safety feature called anti-islanding. Your inverter must disconnect within moments of a grid failure so it can’t energise network lines while crews are repairing them. A basic inverter can only stop — it takes a backup-capable battery to keep powering your home safely.
Do I need a special switchboard for battery backup?
Usually, yes. Backup needs switching at your meter board, often a backup gateway or changeover device, so the system can isolate your home and feed only the essential circuits. Older boards sometimes need an upgrade. We check this when we scope your system and include it in the quote.
How long will a battery run my house in a blackout?
It depends on your battery size and how much you put on the backup circuits. Keep it to essentials like the fridge, lights and Wi-Fi and a typical battery can run them for many hours, longer if solar tops it up during the day. We size it to your needs at the quote.
